Tomsk is the capital of the Tomsk region, West Central Siberian Russia, on the
Tom River, with a population of 505,000.

Tomsk was founded in 1604 around a fort built by Boris Godunov. It was a major
Siberian trade center until bypassed by the construction of the Trans-Siberian RR
in the 1890s. Now, it is a major educational cultural center of Siberia.
